Windows via son blog annonce que Windows 8 sera décliné en 5 éditions et qui seront lancés lors du second semestre 2012.
On commence par les versions Windows 8 qui prend la suite de Windows 7 Starter et Home, et Windows 8 Pro qui prendra la suite de Windows 7 Pro et Ultimate, chacune de ces 2 versions sera décliné en 32 ou 64 bits chacun.
Windows 8 et Windows 8 Pro seront destiné au PC et tablette. La version Pro intégrera : BitLocker et BitLocker To Go, Boot from VHD, Hyper-V, Encrypting File System, Group Policy and Remote Desktop (host).
Et pour finir Windows 8 RT sera destiné aux plateformes ARM et qui sera uniquement vendu installé, il intégrera la suite Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint et note) spécialement étudié pour les écrans tactiles.
